Amnesty International accuses 87 Iranian officials of crimes against humanity
Amnesty International has released a comprehensive 1,000-page report titled ‘Architects of Atrocities,’ documenting systematic crimes against humanity committed by Iranian authorities during the 2022 ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ uprising. The investigation, which included interviews with 270 witnesses, activists, and medical personnel, identifies at least 87 officials responsible for state-orchestrated violence.
The report details a pattern of murder, torture, enforced disappearances, rape, and persecution, noting that Kurdish and Baluchi communities were disproportionately targeted. The unrest was initially triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini while in police custody. Amnesty reports that at least 377 protesters and bystanders were killed during the demonstrations.
Among the officials named are high-ranking members of the security apparatus, including the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and former Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi. Amnesty International is calling on the UN General Assembly to establish an international criminal justice mechanism to address the ongoing impunity within Iran.
