Iran execution wave expands, US & UN condemn
Entities: Mehnam Navab‑Safavi · Islamic Republic of Iran · Ahad Shokouhian · Iranian Judiciary · Marisa Laurito
Overview
The execution wave in Iran kept widening in late July 2026. On 24 July, three Afghan men – Afshar Shah‑Ahmadi, Iman Shafaei and Sadruddin Ahmadzadeh – were sentenced to death by a court in Isfahan province for alleged involvement in a police‑station arson during winter protests. Rights groups said they were held for 40 days without family contact or legal counsel, and Iranian authorities have not commented. Inmates at the two Qazalhesar prisons in Karaj continued their hunger‑strike protest, marking a thirteenth consecutive day of sit‑ins after six death‑row prisoners were moved to solitary cells ahead of scheduled executions. Video released by HRA‑News showed prisoners gathering in a hall, refusing meals and maintaining the strike. On 25 July, the U.S. State Department publicly condemned the executions of protestors and called for the release of all political detainees. That day a Revolutionary Court sentenced 37‑year‑old Isa Chari, linked to the People’s Mujahedin of Iran, to death, while human‑rights monitors noted about 1,500 executions in 2025, a 50 % rise from the previous year. The following day, an Independent International Fact‑Finding Mission in Geneva urged Iran to halt executions of ten men detained for the January protests in Isfahan. The mission highlighted that at least 70 detainees at Dastgerd Prison face capital punishment and noted a pattern of accelerated death‑penalty cases tied to protests that began in December 2025. Amnesty International reported on 27 July that Iranian authorities had intensified repression under “war‑time conditions”, arbitrarily arresting more than 6,000 people—including protesters, journalists and dissidents—since the February attacks by the United States and Israel. The organization documented 39 new death‑sentence rulings for political reasons and called for urgent diplomatic action, noting that an internet blackout hampered verification of abuses.
