Amnesty International warns of violence ahead of Osun State elections

Amnesty International has called on Nigerian authorities to protect human rights and prevent violence ahead of the Osun State gubernatorial election scheduled for August 15, 2026. The human rights group reported disturbing signs of intimidation, interference, and escalating violence across several locations, including Osogbo, Ede, Ife, Oriade, Ijebu-Ijesha, Ilobu, and Ikire.

According to Amnesty International, at least 29 people have been killed in 73 separate incidents across the state. The organization urged the government and security agencies to remain neutral, ensure accountability for violent acts, and guarantee that citizens can vote in a free and fair atmosphere. The group warned that supporters of various politicians have been targeting opponents, fueling instability and impunity in the region.
