Ahead of the Osun State gubernatorial election scheduled for August 15, 2026, political violence and human rights concerns have intensified in Nigeria.

Amnesty International initially warned of escalating instability, reporting that at least 29 people had been killed in 73 separate incidents across locations such as Osogbo, Ede, and Ife. The organization called for government neutrality and accountability to ensure a free and fair voting process.

By mid-August, tensions escalated further as the All Progressives Congress (APC) reported specific attacks, including a shooting in Esa-Oke that resulted in one death and one critical injury, as well as attacks in Atakumasa East and near the Okuku Divisional Police Station. In response to the rising violence, the Accord party’s Imole Campaign Council requested an independent inquiry through the National Human Rights Commission, describing the situation as a “human rights and public safety emergency.”

Recent reports indicate the APC alleges approximately 40 of its members have been killed in various attacks across the state. Specific casualties include Ayegbo Oladale, the nephew of the APC Campaign Council Director-General, and four members in Atakumasa East—Adebayo Dada, Idowu Laide, Ebuke Emmanuel, and Adebiyi Ebenezer—who were reportedly shot. Additionally, House of Representatives candidate Francis Eniade was reportedly attacked near the Okuku Divisional Police Station, leaving associates macheted or abducted.

In a separate development, the Nigerian Navy reportedly arrested APC House of Assembly candidate Babatunde Komolafe Festus and several supporters after a rifle was allegedly discovered during a search of their campaign vehicle. Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has condemned the reported killings and destruction of property.
