Researchers at Utrecht University have identified a physics‑based early‑warning signal that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) may be nearing a critical tipping point far sooner than previously estimated. Using a high‑resolution climate model, they found that freshwater transport at 34° S provides a clear indicator of instability; increasing meltwater from Greenland dilutes salinity and can halt the deep‑water sinking that drives the conveyor belt. The study suggests a possible rapid transition that could bring up to 5‑10 °C cooling in parts of Europe, shift tropical rain belts southward, accelerate sea‑level rise along the North Atlantic coast, and threaten Amazon rainforest precipitation.
Other recent oceanographic work presents a more nuanced picture. Direct measurements from the RAPID‑MOCHA array (since 2004) show high variability without a steady long‑term decline, while proxy records over centuries point to a gradual weakening. Some regional analyses even indicate pockets of resilience that buffer against immediate collapse. Scientists stress the need for expanded monitoring across the Atlantic to resolve these contradictions and improve future climate projections.
