Research continues to document a weakening Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), now at its weakest in roughly a millennium. A July 4 analysis warned that a strengthening El Niño in late 2026 could interact with the Atlantic anomaly to reshape jet‑stream patterns across the Northern Hemisphere. July 7 modelling highlighted the “cold spot” effect of fresh meltwater, while British simulations placed the probability of an irreversible AMOC shutdown at about 10 % under current emissions, rising sharply with continued greenhouse‑gas output. Icelandic officials caution that a full shutdown could render parts of the island near‑uninhabitable and drive severe cooling across northern Europe, shifting rainfall northward and drying the south. A non‑peer‑reviewed July 12 estimate gave a similar ~10 % failure risk by 2100, climbing toward 80‑100 % with unabated fossil‑fuel use, and noted ancillary stresses such as rising electricity demand from AI data centers. July 11 observations linked the cold Atlantic blob to a stronger meridional temperature gradient that bends the jet stream, fostering persistent high‑pressure blocks over Europe and increasing the likelihood of extreme summer heatwaves.
