Amravati hospital fire kills three newborns in NICU
Three newborns died following a fire in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the District Women’s Hospital in Amravati, Maharashtra, in the early hours of Monday. Preliminary reports indicate the blaze was triggered by an explosion in a ventilator on the hospital's third floor around 3:15 am to 3:30 am.
At the time of the incident, approximately 39 infants were receiving treatment in the NICU. Hospital staff and medical personnel conducted an emergency evacuation, successfully rescuing dozens of children. Six infants were transferred to a super-specialty hospital for critical care due to the effects of smoke and burns.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident and promised the strictest action against those responsible. The state government has pledged 5 lakh rupees in financial assistance to the families of the deceased and directed that medical treatment for the injured children be provided at government expense.
Political leaders, including MP Supriya Sule, have criticized the incident as a sign of systemic negligence, calling for immediate fire and medical equipment safety audits across all government and private hospitals in the state.
