Amravati hospital NICU fire

Overview

A fire broke out in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the District Women’s Hospital in Amravati, Maharashtra, around 3:15 am on a Monday. The blaze was reportedly triggered by an explosion or spark from a ventilator on the hospital's third floor.

Of the 39 newborns being treated in the unit at the time, three premature, low-birth-weight infants died from burns or smoke inhalation. Hospital staff and medical personnel conducted an emergency evacuation, successfully rescuing dozens of children. Six other infants sustained serious injuries and were transferred to a super-specialty hospital for critical care.

In response to the tragedy, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered a high-level inquiry and promised strict action against those responsible. The state government pledged 5 lakh rupees in financial assistance to the families of the deceased and directed that medical treatment for the injured be provided at government expense.

Opposition leaders, including MP Supriya Sule, have criticized the incident as a result of systemic negligence, calling for immediate fire and electrical safety audits across all government and private hospitals in the state.
