AMSAC awards Quiulacocha Project to Cerro de Pasco Resources
The state-owned company Activos Mineros S.A.C. (AMSAC) has awarded the Quiulacocha Project to Cerro de Pasco Resources del Perú S.A.C. (CPR). The project focuses on the repurposing of mining tailings to address environmental liabilities that have affected the region for over sixty years.
This initiative introduces a new model for environmental recovery in Peru by utilizing private investment to extract economic value from mining waste. Under traditional remediation schemes, the project would have required approximately S/ 550 million in public funds. By contrast, this new model aims to generate economic benefits and public savings exceeding S/ 1,000 million.
Dante Aguilar, general manager of AMSAC, stated that the project aims to protect the health of local families and create new development opportunities for the populations of Quiulacocha and Cerro de Pasco.
