Amsterdam Dance Event launches Nighttime Culture Index
The Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) and VibeLab have introduced the Nighttime Culture Index, a research initiative designed to measure nightlife and cultural activity across six global cities: Amsterdam, Lagos, New York, São Paulo, Seoul, and Sydney. The project utilizes 30 indicators to examine dimensions such as creative ecology, infrastructure, diversity, community, policy, and sustainability.
Key findings from the study highlight significant disparities in nightlife affordability. When measured against local minimum wages, the cost of entry to a typical club night represents approximately one hour of work in Sydney and 1.3 hours in Amsterdam, compared to 1.8 hours in New York, nine hours in São Paulo, and roughly 25 hours in Lagos.
The research also identified challenges regarding representation and safety. Women and gender-diverse artists comprise between 27% and 32% of event lineups across the studied cities. Additionally, safety concerns were noted in São Paulo and Lagos, where respondents reported significantly lower feelings of safety on surrounding streets compared to inside venues.
