Launch of Nighttime Culture Index
Overview
The Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) and VibeLab have launched the inaugural Nighttime Culture Index (NCI), a global research initiative aimed at mapping and monitoring nightlife ecosystems. The study examines six major cities: Amsterdam, Lagos, New York, São Paulo, Seoul, and Sydney.
Using 30 distinct indicators, the index evaluates nightlife through pillars including creative ecology, infrastructure, diversity, community, policy, and sustainability. Initial findings reveal significant disparities in economic accessibility and representation. For example, the cost of a night out requires approximately one hour of minimum wage work in Sydney and 1.3 hours in Amsterdam, whereas in Lagos, it requires roughly 25 hours.
The research also highlights challenges regarding diversity and safety. Women and gender-diverse artists comprise only 27% to 32% of lineups across the studied cities. Furthermore, safety concerns were noted in São Paulo and Lagos, where respondents reported lower feelings of safety on surrounding streets compared to the interior of venues.
