Anac approves new rules for flight delays and cancellations in Brazil

The National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) has approved new regulations for air transport in Brazil, aimed at increasing transparency and passenger protection during flight delays, cancellations, or interruptions. The new rules, which take effect 30 days after official publication, mandate that airlines inform passengers at the time of purchase about potential operational changes due to weather or security. Additionally, companies must use digital channels to provide real-time updates on departure forecasts, reaccommodation options, and assistance procedures as soon as issues arise.

Material assistance remains mandatory: airlines must provide food after two hours of delay and accommodation with transportation after four hours if an overnight stay is required. In exceptional cases where local infrastructure or suppliers are unavailable, passengers may pay for these services themselves and seek reimbursement from the airline within seven days.

These regulatory changes come amid data from AirHelp showing a 14.5% increase in flight cancellations between June and August, affecting 786,200 passengers. Delays of two hours or more also rose by 17.9% during the same period. Major hubs like Galeão and Guarulhos recorded the highest volumes of affected passengers.
