Anadegas to disconnect electronic payment devices at 780 gas stations

The National Association of Gasoline Retailers (Anadegas) has announced that its 780 affiliated gas stations will disconnect Verifón electronic payment devices on September 25. This move serves as a protest against high transaction fees, which Anadegas president Juan Elías Pérez claims consume approximately 27% of retailers' gross profits. Pérez noted that Dominican stations face higher electronic payment costs than many other countries in the region.

While government officials from the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and SMEs and Pro Consumidor have attempted to mediate, Anadegas maintains that no satisfactory agreement has been reached. The potential shift to cash-only transactions has drawn criticism from business leaders and legislators, who warn of a negative impact on consumers and the country's digital economy. The National Council of Private Enterprise (Conep) has urged all parties to engage in dialogue to avoid disrupting service and increasing the burden on citizens.
