Anak Krakatau erupts twice, emitting 300‑meter ash plume over Sunda Strait

On Saturday 25 July 2026, the Anak Krakatau volcano in the Sunda Strait erupted twice, first at 16:52 WIB and again at 18:00 WIB. Each eruption produced an ash column that rose about 300 metres above the crater (approximately 457 metres above sea level) and was carried northwest by the wind.

The PV Magna Indonesia monitoring centre recorded seismic amplitudes up to 43 mm, with each eruption lasting roughly one minute. The alert level was raised from Level II (Waspada) to Level III (Siaga). Authorities urged fishermen and tourists to remain at least two kilometres from the crater and to stay informed through official PVMBG updates, noting that further activity remains possible.
