Anak Krakatau volcanic activity
Overview
The Anak Krakatau volcano in the Sunda Strait has experienced a period of increased volcanic activity. In late July 2026, the volcano erupted twice, producing ash plumes approximately 300 metres above the crater. Following these events, the alert level was raised from Level II (Waspada) to Level III (Siaga).
By mid-August 2026, activity intensified, with the Indonesian Geological Agency reporting eight eruptions within a 24-hour period. These eruptions included incandescent lava bursts and ash clouds reaching heights of 200 to 300 metres. Seismographic data recorded various tremors, including eruption earthquakes and harmonic tremors.
The volcano remains at Level III (Siaga) status. Authorities have issued safety recommendations for the public, tourists, and fishermen to avoid activities within a 2 to 3-kilometre radius of the crater to mitigate risks from volcanic projections.
