Gunung Anak Krakatau Stay on Level III Alert; Tourism Persists, Hoax Video Denied
Gunung Anak Krakatau remains under a Level III (Siaga) alert as of early July 2026. Monitoring by the Centre for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) recorded four hybrid/fase banyak tremors and one continuous tremor on 6 July, and two minor eruptions on 2 July (14:05 WIB) and 3 July (11:50 WIB) producing ash plumes 5‑10 m high. PVMBG spokesman Rita said the activity “has not decreased and the potential for eruption remains.”
Local authorities in Lampung Selatan and Serang districts report that tourism continues unabated. Hundreds of visitors are still flocking to Pulau Sebesi, which lies outside the three‑kilometre danger zone, and the beaches of Anyer, Cinangka and Carita, about 42 km from the volcano, are deemed safe. Camat Firdaus and Serang Vice‑Regent Muhammad Najib Hamas both assured the public that the area is open for recreation, provided visitors stay clear of the restricted radius.
A video circulating online that purported to show a dramatic eruption from a ship was declared a hoax by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources' Geological Agency. Agency head Lana Saria stated, “The video is not a recording of the current eruption activity.” The agencies urged the public to rely on official channels such as PVMBG bulletins and the MAGMA Indonesia app for accurate information.
