Anak Krakatau volcano erupts multiple times in Sunda Strait
Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait experienced significant volcanic activity on Sunday, August 16, 2026. The Geological Agency of Indonesia reported eight eruptions accompanied by incandescent lava bursts during a 24-hour observation period.
Eruption columns reached heights of 200 to 300 meters above the crater summit, producing grey to black ash clouds that moved toward the west, northwest, and southwest. Seismographic data recorded various tremors, including eruption earthquakes with amplitudes between 43 and 60 mm, 46 inflation earthquakes, and 10 harmonic tremors.
The volcano remains at Level III (Siaga/Alert) status. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has issued a strict recommendation for the public, tourists, and climbers to avoid all activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the active crater to mitigate the risk of volcanic material projections.
