Anak Krakatau volcano erupts with 400-meter ash column

Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait erupted on Saturday afternoon, August 22, 2026. The eruption, which occurred at 11:57 WIB, produced a thick column of grey to black volcanic ash reaching approximately 400 meters above the peak.

Seismographic data recorded a maximum amplitude of 55 millimeters during the eruption, which lasted for approximately 139 seconds. The ash column was observed moving toward the southwest.

Authorities from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) and local monitoring posts report that volcanic activity remains fluctuant, meaning the potential for follow-up eruptions persists. The volcano is currently at Level III (Siaga) status.

Fishermen and tourists are advised to maintain a distance of at least 2 kilometers from the crater and to follow official recommendations from the Geological Agency to ensure safety.
