Anak Krakatau eruption disrupts Indonesian aviation and schools
The eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait has caused widespread disruption across Indonesia, particularly affecting aviation and education. Volcanic ash plumes have reached heights of up to 15,000 meters, leading to the closure of at least eight airports, including Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta and Halim Perdanakusuma. These disruptions have impacted approximately 270,000 passengers, with thousands of flights cancelled or delayed.
To mitigate health risks from volcanic ash, authorities in Jakarta, Lampung, and parts of Banten and West Java have implemented remote learning for schools. Residents have been advised to wear masks and limit outdoor activities. In response to the ash dispersion, the Indonesian government has also explored weather modification techniques, such as stimulating rain, to clear the ash from the air.
While the continuous eruption episode has subsided, the volcano remains at Level 3 (Siaga) alert status. Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity and have warned citizens to remain outside a 3-kilometer exclusion zone around the crater.
