Anak Krakatau volcano maintains Level III alert amid continuous eruptions
The Anak Krakatau volcano in the Sunda Strait has been experiencing continuous eruptive activity, maintaining a Level III (Alert) status. Since late Friday, September 4, 2026, the volcano has undergone multiple eruptions, including a series of Strombolian-type events characterized by lava fountains and the ejection of incandescent rocks and volcanic ash.
Reports from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources indicate that the eruptions have produced audible booms and tremors felt in parts of West Java, Banten, and Lampung. While some reports noted ash columns reaching heights of several hundred meters, other observations described the phenomenon as a lava fountain effect.
Authorities have implemented a safety radius of 3 kilometers from the active crater, advising tourists, hikers, and residents to avoid the area. Despite public concerns regarding a potential tsunami—recalling the 2018 event—the PVMBG stated that the current growth of the volcano's body is relatively small and does not currently pose a risk of a large-scale collapse capable of triggering a tsunami. Monitoring of the volcano's morphology and seismic activity remains intensive.
