Anak Krakatau’s Level III Alert Prompts Banten Evacuation Plans
Since early June 2026, monitoring agencies detected increased volcanic activity at Anak Krakatau, including elevated SO₂ emissions, heat anomalies, and a surge in shallow volcanic earthquakes. The PVMBG reported hundreds of such events, leading to the volcano’s status being raised from Level II (Waspada) to Level III (Siaga) on 2 July 2026.
Provincial disaster agency BPBD Banten responded by strengthening mitigation measures and coordinating with BMKG, PVMBG, the TNI, police and local authorities. "Fokus pemerintah tidak hanya pada aktivitas erupsi Gunung Anak Krakatau, tetapi juga terhadap kemungkinan dampak yang ditimbulkan, terutama potensi tsunami," said BPBD head Lutfi Mujahidin. The agency emphasized that a "golden time" of roughly 40 minutes is built into the early warning system for coastal residents to evacuate safely if a tsunami‑triggering eruption occurs.
Residents and tourists in the Anyer and Carita coastal zones were advised not to panic, to avoid activities within a three‑kilometre radius of the vent, and to follow official updates. Despite the heightened alert, tourism at beaches such as Bandulu and Pandan continued normally. The current height of Anak Krakatau is about 158 metres above sea level, markedly lower than the 337 metres recorded before the 2018 Sunda Strait tsunami.
