Anambra State police issue safety advisory following fatal flooding
Following the death of a six-year-old pupil in floodwaters last week, the Anambra State Police Command has issued a safety advisory to parents and guardians in Nigeria. The advisory comes after heavy rainfall in Awka and surrounding areas caused renewed fears among residents.
The police command urged caregivers to avoid allowing children to travel during heavy downpours, particularly in areas with visible flooding or strong currents. Officials warned that floodwater can hide life-threatening hazards such as open drains and erosion channels. Parents were advised to prioritize safety over punctuality and to ensure children stay away from rivers, culverts, and construction sites.
In Awka, many parents chose to keep their children home from school on Tuesday due to heavy morning rains. This decision follows the recent tragedy involving Success Ezenwafor, a student at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Primary School, who was swept away by floodwaters while traveling in a bus. While other passengers were rescued, the child's body was recovered the following day.
