Anambra State flash flood fatality and safety response

Overview

On September 22, a flash flood along the Nibo–Isiagu Road in Awka, Anambra State, resulted in the death of Success Ezenwafor, a primary school pupil at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Primary School. The incident occurred when a vehicle transporting schoolchildren became trapped in rising waters following heavy rainfall. While the Anambra State Police Command and community members successfully rescued seven children and two adults, the student's body was later recovered.

Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo expressed condolences to the victim's family during a service at the Cathedral of St. Faith in Awka commemorating Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary. He urged citizens to take collective responsibility for environmental safety, advising residents to manage rainwater runoff, clean drainage systems, and plant trees to mitigate future impacts.

In response to the tragedy and renewed heavy rainfall in Awka, the Anambra State Police Command issued a safety advisory to parents and guardians. The command urged caregivers to avoid allowing children to travel during heavy downpours, particularly in areas with visible flooding or strong currents, noting that floodwater can hide hazards such as open drains and erosion channels. Following these concerns, many parents in Awka chose to keep their children home from school on Tuesday to prioritize safety.
