Anamola questions unblocking of Venâncio Mondlane's bank accounts

James Njiji, the interim secretary-general of the National Alliance for a Free and Autonomous Mozambique (Anamola), has questioned the legal consistency of the Supreme Court's decision to unblock the bank accounts of party founder Venânció Mondlane.

Mondlane's accounts had been frozen since November 2024 following orders from the Maputo Judicial Court. While the Supreme Court recently ordered the unblocking, stating that the prerequisites for maintaining the restriction no longer existed, Njiji raised concerns regarding how this decision aligns with the serious charges Mondlane still faces.

Mondlane is currently accused by the Public Prosecutor's Office of crimes including public apology for crime, incitement to collective disobedience, and incitement to terrorism. These charges stem from his social media broadcasts calling for protests, strikes, and mobilizations during the 2024 post-election demonstrations. His trial is scheduled to take place at the Supreme Court on November 17.
