Second, the Supreme Court ordered the unfreezing of Mondlane’s bank accounts and mobile money wallets, such as M-Pesa and e-Mola. The accounts had been frozen since November 2024. The court ruled that maintaining the freeze without original justifications constituted an “unjustified and disproportionate restriction to the right of property” guaranteed by the Constitution. This ruling requires commercial banks and mobile services, including M-Kesh, to release the funds immediately.

While analysts suggest this may assist Mondlane in covering legal costs, the decision has drawn internal scrutiny. James Njiji, the interim secretary-general of ANAMOLA, has questioned the legal consistency of unblocking the accounts given the serious nature of the charges Mondlane still faces. Mondlane continues to characterize the proceedings as ‘politically motivated’ and maintains an international diplomatic campaign to call for monitoring.
