Anas reports 485 million transits during Italy's summer exodus

Anas has reported that the 2026 summer exodus on the Italian road and highway network concluded with 485 million transits recorded between July 16 and September 6. Data from the Anas Road Mobility Observatory, utilizing approximately 660 monitoring stations, indicates that while traffic volumes remained high, they were more evenly distributed throughout the week rather than being heavily concentrated on weekends.

Claudio Andrea Gemme, CEO of Anas, noted that this trend toward more distributed mobility helped mitigate congestion and improve travel safety. To facilitate the final wave of travelers returning for the new school year, Anas suspended 83% of its active roadworks (1,175 out of 1,414 sites) until September 7.

During the final weekend of the season, specific measures were implemented to manage heavy traffic, including a temporary ban on heavy vehicles (over 7.5 tons) on the SS16 Adriatic highway in the Bari province on September 6 to assist commuters. Despite the high volume of movements, the agency reported no significant systemic disruptions across the national network.
