An Anchorage runner was hospitalized after being attacked by a brown bear on the Wolverine Bowl trail at Prospect Heights this week. The woman, who was running alone on Thursday morning, successfully used bear spray to fend off the animal and was able to self-rescue to the trailhead.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game responded to the scene, where biologists collected samples. While the bear was not located during the search, officials have since posted warning signs at the Prospect Heights trailhead and advised hikers to avoid closed trails in the area.

Department officials noted that thick summer foliage can reduce visibility, increasing the likelihood of surprise encounters. They recommend that those traveling in bear country carry deterrents such as bear spray or firearms, travel in groups, and make noise to avoid startling wildlife.
