Brown bear attack on trail runner in Alaska

Overview

A professional trail runner was hospitalized following a brown bear attack on the Wolverine Bowl trail at Prospect Heights in Anchorage, Alaska. The victim, identified as North Face athlete Klaire Rhodes, was running alone on a Thursday morning when she was attacked. Rhodes successfully used bear spray to fend off the animal and was able to self-rescue to the trailhead.

Rhodes sustained claw and bite marks, including a deep puncture wound to her left hip, and described the encounter as a ‘nightmare come to life’. While the attack has disrupted her training for upcoming European races, she expressed an intention to return to running in the future.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game responded to the scene to collect samples. Although the bear was not located, officials have posted warning signs at the Prospect Heights trailhead. Biologists noted that thick summer foliage can reduce visibility and increase the likelihood of surprise encounters, advising hikers to travel in groups and carry deterrents.
