Ancient Greek myth and classical theatre festivals launch across Italy

Various theatrical productions exploring ancient Greek myths and classical drama are taking place across several Italian archaeological and historical sites this September.

VeliaTeatro is continuing its tour of tragic and comic ancient theatre, with performances scheduled for the Antiquarium of Palinuro and Rodio. From September 7 to 17, the group will host a ‘festival within a festival’ at the Castello Talamo Atenolfi in Castelnuovo Cilento. The program includes solo interpretations of Homeric poems by Gianluigi Tosto, Menander’s ‘The Arbitration’, Plato’s ‘Symposium’, and a contemporary reimagining of ‘Medea and Clytemnestra’.

Simultaneously, the ‘Ecstatic Pompeii’ series, organized by Casa del contemporaneo, has launched in the Vesuvian archaeological areas. This series focuses on Dionysian mysteries and Greek mythology. Recent performances, such as the story of Semele, have been staged at sites including Oplontis and the Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii. The series is scheduled to continue through the end of September at various locations, including Villa San Marco.
