Ancient drama and mythology theatrical festivals

Various theatrical events and festivals exploring ancient Greek drama and mythology are being held across Greece and Italy.

In Larissa, Greece, the 6th International Ancient Drama Network is taking place from August 24 to August 30, 2026. Organized by the Thessalian Theatre in collaboration with local cultural authorities, the event functions as a multidisciplinary platform for research and artistic exchange. The program features workshops, seminars, and performances at the Second Ancient Theatre of Larissa, including works such as ‘Romeo and Juliet – A Midsummer Night’ and ‘Iphigenia in Aulis’.

In Italy, several productions centered on classical drama and Greek myths are scheduled throughout September at various archaeological sites. VeliaTeatro is conducting a tour of tragic and comic ancient theatre at locations including the Antiquarium of Palinuro and Rodio, featuring interpretations of Homeric poems and works by Menander and Plato. Additionally, the ‘Ecstatic Pompeii’ series by Casa del contemporaneo is staging performances focused on Dionysian mysteries at sites such as Oplontis and the Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii.
