Ancient Nicopolis: Restoration begins on Great Theatre's lower cavea
The Greek Ministry of Culture has launched the third phase of a restoration project for the Great Theatre of Ancient Nicopolis. This phase focuses on the lower cavea, which is one of the most significant monuments of the Roman city.
The project involves the procurement and installation of 167 new limestone seats and the reconstruction of the corresponding staircase steps. Additionally, marble slabs will be installed on the floor of the orchestra. The works are being funded by the Regional Operational Program ‘Epirus 2021-2027’.
Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni noted that the theatre is a central pillar in the broader plan to promote the archaeological site of Nicopolis. This comprehensive management plan includes restoring the stage building and side wings, creating a network of paths, and implementing accessibility infrastructure for individuals with disabilities. The new limestone elements will be installed using reversible techniques to ensure they remain distinguishable from the original ancient material while maintaining architectural cohesion.
