Archaeological restoration of ancient Greek theatres

Overview

Archaeological restoration projects are underway at ancient theatre sites in Greece.

In Nicopolis, the Greek Ministry of Culture has initiated the third phase of restoration for the Great Theatre. This stage focuses on the lower cavea and includes the installation of 167 new limestone seats, reconstruction of staircase steps, and the placement of marble slabs in the orchestra. The project, funded by the ‘Epirus 2021-2027’ program, aims to improve site management and accessibility while using reversible techniques to distinguish new materials from ancient ones. Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni noted the theatre is a “central pillar” in a broader plan to promote the archaeological site, which includes restoring the stage building and creating accessibility infrastructure.

The Ancient Theatre of Stratos officially reopened to the public on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, following the completion of its ‘Stabilization, Restoration, and Enhancement of the Stratos Theatre’ project. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Minister Mendoni and the Governor of Western Greece, Nektarios Farmakis.

Implemented by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Aetolia-Acarnania and Lefkada, the project was funded by the Region of Western Greece through the ‘Western Greece 2014–2020’ Operational Program, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and national resources. Governor Farmakis stated that this project completes a cycle of cultural revitalization in the Aetolia-Acarnania region, following similar interventions at the ancient theatres of Pleura and Oiniodas, with total regional investment for the three sites exceeding €3.2 million.
