Ancient Roman shipwreck discovered off the coast of Turkey

Archaeologists have discovered a 2,100-year-old Roman-era shipwreck off the coast of Antalya, Turkey. The vessel, which likely sank during a storm while traveling from Rhosus to Rome, lies at a depth of approximately 55 meters near Adrasan.

The wreck contains thousands of luxury ceramic items, including 122 different forms and sizes of plates, bowls, and trays. These artifacts offer a rare look into the dining culture and luxury trade of the Roman period. Many of the ceramics are believed to have originated from Rhosus, a production center mentioned in the historical writings of the Roman statesman Cicero.

Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy noted that underwater excavations have already yielded thousands of objects. The discovery is considered significant by experts for its ability to connect physical artifacts with ancient historical texts.
