Roman shipwreck discovery in Turkey
Overview
Archaeologists discovered a 2,100-year-old Roman-era shipwreck off the coast of Adrasan in Turkey’s Antalya province. Located at a depth of approximately 55 meters, the vessel likely sank during a storm while traveling from Rhosus toward Rome.
The wreck contains thousands of luxury ceramic items, including 122 different shapes and sizes of plates, bowls, and trays. These artifacts provide insight into Roman dining culture and luxury trade. Many of the ceramics are believed to have originated from Rhosus, a production center referenced in the historical writings of the Roman statesman Cicero.
Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy stated that underwater excavations have already yielded thousands of objects, noting the discovery’s significance in connecting physical artifacts with ancient historical texts.
