Ancient shipwreck off Andros island yields 600‑650 amphorae
Greek archaeologists from the Ministry of Culture’s Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities located an ancient merchant shipwreck off the island of Andros after a private tip. The wreck lies at a depth of 39‑44 metres and its cargo consists of an estimated 600‑650 commercial pointed‑bottom amphorae.
The amphorae have been dated to the late 5th and early 4th centuries BC and represent at least three production types – Mende, Peparethos and the Solokha 2 type. Divers Dionysios Evangelistis, Angelos Tsompanidis and seabed technician Louis Mersenier recovered a sample of each type for analysis. The site also yielded a fragment of a lead anchor stock and a few stones likely used as ballast.
The discovery is described as a significant addition to knowledge of late Classical maritime trade and navigation in the Aegean, with further study expected to clarify the ship’s origin and trade routes.
