Andros ancient shipwreck discovery

Overview

Greek underwater archaeologists located a Classical‑period merchant shipwreck off Andros in the Aegean at a depth of 39‑44 metres. The wreck, dated to the late 5th or early 4th century BC, contained an estimated 600‑650 pointed‑bottom amphorae representing three production types (Mende, Peparethos and Solokha 2). Divers recovered representative samples, a fragment of a lead‑coated anchor stock and ballast stones. The find, prompted by a private tip to the Ministry of Culture’s Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities, is being hailed as a major addition to knowledge of late Classical maritime trade and navigation, with further analysis expected to clarify the ship’s origin and trade routes.
