Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus hosts first fully accessible Euripides 'The Trojans' performance
The National Theatre of Greece staged Euripides' tragedy The Trojans on 31 July and 1 August 2024 at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus. The production, directed by Eleni Efthymiou and translated by Giannis Tsarouchis, featured a mixed ensemble of 22 actors, including members of the disability‑focused group En Dynami.
Designed as the first fully accessible performance in the venue’s history, the show was part of the Athens‑Epidaurus Festival’s “Culture for All” initiative, supported by Alpha Bank, the National Theatre and accessibility consultancy Liminal. Accessibility provisions encompassed organized transport from Athens, tactile tours, Braille programmes, Greek Sign Language interpretation, subtitles and audio description, extending inclusion to the stage itself.
Since 2023 the National Theatre’s accessibility programme has delivered 219 actions benefiting more than 134 000 people, and 19 accessible productions have drawn over 1 600 viewers. The Trojans therefore marks a milestone for inclusive cultural practice in Greece.
