Ancient Theatre of Stratos reopens after restoration

The Ancient Theatre of Stratos has officially reopened to the public following the completion of a major restoration and stabilization project. The inauguration ceremony took place on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, attended by Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni.

The project, titled ‘Stabilization, Restoration, and Enhancement of the Stratos Theatre’, was implemented by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Aetolia-Acarnania and Lefkada. It was funded by the Region of Western Greece through the 2014–2020 NSRF program, with co-financing from the European Regional Development Fund and national resources. The Municipality of Agrinio also contributed by funding the initial study.

Nektarios Farmakis, Governor of Western Greece, noted that this project completes a cycle of cultural revitalization in the Aetolia-Acarnania region, following similar interventions at the ancient theatres of Pleura and Oiniodas. The total investment for the three ancient theatres in the region exceeds €3.2 million. The restoration aims to protect the monument from decay while promoting local tourism and cultural identity.
