Andalusia expands health workforce with 41,639 summer contracts

The Andalusian Health Service (SAS) presented its Summer Plan 2026, committing to hire 41,639 staff between June and October to cover vacations and reinforce assistance. The plan involves an investment of €168 million, a 14% rise over the previous year.

Of the contracts, 30,158 are for health personnel, including 1,993 doctors – an 82.7% increase – as well as 14,741 nurses and 13,424 technical and auxiliary staff. The aim is to deliver more than 6.4 million care acts during July‑September, about 200 000 more than the summer of 2025.

Hospital capacity will be bolstered to keep 12 774 beds and intensive‑care places operational (85.7% of installed capacity) and to maintain a reserve of 2 125 beds that can be activated within 24 hours. The plan also targets a 76% operating‑room availability, with 431 operating theatres remaining active throughout the summer. As the health minister Antonio Sanz stated, the goal is to "find a balance between professionals’ right to vacation and the system’s duty to guarantee health care".
