Andalusia reports nine West Nile virus cases as alerts extend
The Andalusian health authorities confirmed nine human cases of West Nile virus this season, all located in the province of Sevilla. The total rose from six to nine after three new infections were detected, including two mild cases in men aged 40 and 48 and a 71‑year‑old patient with neurological symptoms who remains hospitalized. All diagnoses were confirmed by PCR at Hospital Universitario Virgen del Rocío.
The regional government, led by Vice President Antonio Sanz, declared fifteen municipalities as areas under alert and extended the alert periods for the affected municipalities to 20‑21 August. He warned of a growing incidence and recommended protective measures such as the use of mosquito repellents, wearing light clothing that covers the body, and installing mosquito nets. Surveillance has been intensified in the alert zones, with entomological, animal and human monitoring, and local administrations are urged to strengthen mosquito‑control actions.
The outbreak prompted a renewed focus on public‑health communication, community‑pharmacy outreach, and coordination between the Junta de Andalucía and local councils to mitigate further spread.
