West Nile virus cases surge across Europe and the US

Overview

The West Nile virus outbreak continues to expand across Europe and North America. In Greece, health experts warn that current domestic case counts may only represent the “tip of an iceberg,” as approximately 80% of infections are asymptomatic. Professor Petros Lygoxygkas of Oxford University noted that fewer than 1% of cases develop into severe disease affecting the central nervous system.

In Romania, reported cases have nearly tripled compared to the previous year, with 83 cases and five deaths reported. In Cyprus, 14 cases and one death have been recorded. Recent developments in Cyprus include the hospitalization of a 70-year-old man in intensive care after experiencing severe tremors and an inability to respond. In response, the Nicosia municipality and the Ministry of Health have planned spraying operations and daily mosquito-control targeting stagnant water.

In Italy, emergency mosquito control measures are being implemented across multiple regions. In Fasano, nocturnal disinfestation has been scheduled following confirmed cases, including two tourists. Other reported incidents include the death of a 90-year-old man in Cassago Brianza and the detection of the virus in an animal in Chiavari.

In the United States, the virus has been detected in mosquito traps in Chatham, Fulton, and DeKalb counties in Georgia, where officials have confirmed eight human cases and one death. Officials warn that cases may rise as mosquito season continues through October. This follows previous reports in California, where the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District identified a virus-positive mosquito, contributing to a nationwide total of 504 reported cases.
