Andalusia gender violence crisis prompts Ministry of Equality meeting

Spain’s Ministry of Equality has convened a new Crisis Committee in Seville to address the rise in gender-based violence in Andalusia. The meeting, led by Minister Ana Redondo, aims to analyze recent killings reported in July and August.

Andalusia has recorded ten murders of women so far in 2026, matching the total count for the entire year of 2024. The Ministry noted that the region has seen the highest number of gender-based killings since records began, as well as in 2025 and 2026.

The situation has sparked political tension between the central government and the Andalusian regional executive. María Jesús Montero, secretary general of the PSOE-A, criticized President Juanma Moreno for failing to address structural violence, while the PP spokesperson, Toni Martín, denied claims of inaction, stating that the regional government had responded to the Ministry’s inquiries.
