Gender violence crisis in Andalusia

Overview

Spain’s Ministry of Equality convened a Crisis Committee in Seville to address a surge in gender-based violence in Andalusia. The Ministry reported that the region has recorded ten murders of women in 2026, a figure that matches the total for all of 2024 and represents the highest number of killings since records began. This spike has led to political friction between the central government and the Andalusian regional executive regarding the handling of structural violence.

In response to these challenges, Andalusian provincial authorities have launched various initiatives to support women’s rights. In Huelva, provincial councils are coordinating a campaign for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, with a specific focus on vicarious violence. Additionally, the ‘Tierra de Mujeres’ program in Córdoba has returned to promote equality and economic participation for rural women through artistic performances and workshops.
