Andalusia, Spain hits peak electricity demand and blackouts amid heat wave

A prolonged heat wave across southern Spain pushed electricity consumption to a summer record. In Almería province the grid reached 7,285 MW at night, the highest demand recorded for the season, while Sevilla, Málaga, Cádiz and other Andalusian provinces also saw sharply increased usage.

At the same time, residents on the Trassierra road in Córdoba have endured daily rolling power cuts of two to three hours as the network strains under the load. Neighbours have filed complaints against the utility, Endesa, which attributes the outages to overloaded circuits and suspected illegal connections. The company says inspections are planned to prevent further disruptions.

Meteorological authorities have maintained orange alerts for extreme temperatures in several Andalusian areas, warning that the high heat is expected to persist, further stressing the power system.
