Spain energy price volatility and inflation trends
Overview
Fuel prices in Spain have risen for six consecutive weeks, approaching yearly highs. Following the removal of the 10% VAT reduction in early July, fuel costs increased by 21%, with diesel reaching approximately €1.82 per litre and gasoline roughly €1.70 per litre by mid-August. This surge in energy costs contributed to Spain’s annual inflation rate rising to 4.3% in August, its highest level since 2023.
Electricity markets continue to experience extreme volatility. On September 9, wholesale prices dropped to 1 €/MWh for five hours during the morning and early afternoon due to solar energy surpluses. Despite these lows, the daily average remained at 107.76 €/MWh, with peak prices reaching 205.52 €/MWh between 20:00 and 21:00. Market rates remain influenced by international gas prices and CO2 emission rights, though the daily average in Spain has been impacted by gas price caps.
Due to surges in solar production, midday hours have become significantly cheaper, sometimes rivaling or beating traditional low-cost nighttime hours. In some instances, wholesale prices have dropped to 0.00 €/MWh during peak solar production between 13:00 and 16:00. Experts suggest consumers can achieve annual savings of between 150 and 300 euros by optimizing usage based on time-of-use pricing. To manage costs, consumers are advised to monitor meters for billing errors and, if discrepancies arise, document evidence to file complaints through organizations like DECO Proteste or the Energy Services Regulatory Authority (ERSE).
