Andalusia spending oversight sparks political dispute

The PSOE's general secretary in Andalusia, María Jesús Montero, has criticized the regional government for what she describes as an ‘absolute lack of control’ over public funds. This follows a report from the Cámara de Cuentas regarding the shift from prior fiscal oversight to a permanent financial control system implemented by the Junta de Andalucía between 2020 and 2024.

Montero argued that the previous system allowed the Intervention of the Junta to review and potentially halt spending before it occurred, whereas the current system only monitors funds after they have been spent. She noted that 37,291 million euros were transitioned to this new modality, with 80% of those funds belonging to the Servicio Andaluz de Salud (SAS).

In response, Vice President and Minister of Economy, Carolina España, rejected the accusations, stating that the report only points to ‘formal defects’ and that not a single euro has been misappropriated. She maintained that the external oversight body does not request a return to the previous oversight model.
