Andalusia suffers worst wildfire season in three decades

Andalusia is experiencing its most devastating wildfire season in three decades. As of August 23, 2026, the region has recorded over 57,500 hectares burned across more than 260 forest fires, resulting in 14 fatalities.

The extreme conditions were exacerbated by heavy previous rainfall that led to an abundance of vegetation, which subsequently dried out before the summer heat arrived. Notable fires include the Niebla blaze, which burned 33,000 hectares and is described as one of the most complex in history, and fires in Los Gallardos, where 14 people died.

Other affected areas include Villanueva del Castillejo, Rincón del Membrillo within Doñana National Park, Grazalema, Las Tres Villas, and Soportújar. The total burned area includes 27,853 hectares of trees, 15,959 hectares of scrubland, and 13,354 hectares of pasture.
