Andalusia to review international academic exchange safety after student murder in Mexico

Andalusian authorities have announced a review of selection processes for international academic exchange programs following the murder of Claudia Tacoronte in Mexico. Tacoronte, a student from the University of Granada (UGR), was killed while participating in an exchange program at the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos.

Jorge Paradela, the Counselor for University, stated that while the regional government does not have direct jurisdiction over destination selection or mobility security—as these agreements are managed by individual universities—the government will participate in intersectoral university meetings. The goal is to ensure that security warnings and recommendations from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are communicated more effectively to both students and universities before international stays are authorized.

In response to the incident, the University of Granada has canceled planned exchanges in the state of Morelos. Paradela has called for total determination from Mexican authorities to clarify the facts and apprehend the perpetrator.
