Murder of Spanish student and rising violence at UAEM

Overview

On September 12, 2026, 21-year-old Spanish exchange student Claudia Tacoronte Aguilera was killed in Cuautla, Morelos, following a knife attack near the Casa de la Cultura while attending a workshop at the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos (UAEM). The attack reportedly occurred after she attempted to report a mobile phone theft.

By September 20, a judge formally linked the primary suspect, Francisco Javier ‘N’ (known as ‘Paco el Trompas’ or ‘El Trompas’), to the criminal process and ordered mandatory pretrial detention. The Morelos Prosecutor's Office is pursuing a femicide classification, seeking a maximum penalty of 70 years in prison, citing the nature of the injuries and the public exposure of the body.

The murder has triggered significant international repercussions. The University of Granada has suspended academic exchanges with the UAEM, and Spanish MEP Antonio López-Istúriz addressed the Mexican Senate calling for increased EU-Mexico cooperation. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the killing, noting it as part of a series of at least five femicides involving UAEM students since April 2025.

Violence against the university community escalated on September 26, 2026, when two UAEM Preparatoria Número 2 students, identified as Gael and Christian Shamed, were killed in an armed attack in the Chulavista neighborhood of Cuernavaca. The victims, aged 17, were reportedly traveling on motorcycles after attending a birthday celebration when gunmen opened fire, leaving a third teenager injured.

As of October 7, 2026, the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) is investigating the Chulavista homicide. Prosecutor Fernando Blumenkron Escobar stated that authorities are analyzing digital evidence, including anonymous social media posts, threatening messages directed at the student community, and a banner found at school facilities. The FGE is coordinating with federal agencies, including the National Intelligence Center, to locate the suspects.
