Andalusian PSOE names Montero, Espadas, Díaz as Senate candidates

The Andalusian branch of Spain’s Socialist Party (PSOE‑A) has confirmed three candidates for the Senate seats designated by the Andalusian Parliament: María Jesús Montero, the party’s secretary general; Juan Espadas, the party’s Senate spokesperson; and former regional president Susana Díaz. The party must submit its proposals by 10:00 a.m. on 20 July, after which the full slate of nine Andalusian senators will be appointed in the Parliament’s plenary session on 23 July.

The selection mirrors the results of the 17 May regional election, in which PSOE‑A secured 28 seats, finishing second to the People’s Party (PP‑A) with 53 seats. Under the governing coalition agreement with Vox, the PP will cede one of its five allocated Senate seats to Vox, leaving four for the PP and two for Vox. Montero, who resigned her Congress seat for Sevilla last month, is set to return to the Cortes Generales via the Senate.

The three nominees—Espadas and Díaz, who already serve as senators by designation, and Montero, a new addition—represent the PSOE‑A’s share of the nine Senate positions allotted to Andalusia.
